Sinkholes: Hungry, Lurking, and Coming for a Van Near You

sinkhole

Sinkholes, nature’s version of the actual Morlocks, are fascinating as well as scary things. They seem out of nowhere, swallowing up homes as well as vehicles like a dull repossession agent.

A massive sinkhole currently devouring a significant downtown street within Ottawa, Canada’s capital, triggered commuter chaos, ruptured a water and gasoline main, flooded a partly constructed subterranean LRT station, and required the life of an harmless Dodge Grand Caravan.

The design might have been spared by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, but this automobile wasn’t. Ottawa was last in the sinkhole news in 2012, when a man (and the Hyundai Accent) had been gobbled up by a nasty freeway.

Let this be considered a lesson to all drivers: the Earth is hungry.
